Referring to the main body of a church as "nave" comes from the Latin navis, related to ships -- easily understood given the resemblance between a gothic ribbed, vaulted ceiling and the hull of a ship. To exaggerate that feel, I flipped this image 180 degrees, suggesting the curving sides of a hull sloping down to the keel beam - here, represented by the ceiling's central rib, adorned with carved boss stones at the rib intersection points.
