Standby Eagle

Description

A bald eagle resting in the trees in between fishing forays. Bald Eagles, especially in the shadows are difficult to shoot because of the extreme contrast. If you expose for the white head the rest of the scene is usually almost black. If you expose for the body, the head is completely blown out. I was able to get this perfect exposure using the Sony a6000 HDR feature which brackets 3 fast shots and produces a finished blend in the camera. The eagle was quite still or it wouldn't have worked.
Sony a6000, SEL55210 lens, ISO-100, f6.3, 1/60, HDR @ 5EV, hand held.

Exif: Focal Length: 210mm

Thank you all for your kind comments. I have used this multiple exposure blending process for years but it always involved a tripod, a fair amount of time between exposures and quite a bit of time post processing with external software. This built in feature opens up a lot of new possibilities. #11129826

It's a great shot, Gary. Where was this taken at? I live in Alaska and often take photos of eagles and know that it is indeed something that can be difficult. Congratulations on your POTD! #11132137
