Very science-fiction-looking image, splendid color, contrast and detail. #143444

Yes, this is quite striking, Paul. I like Carol's description: very sci-fi looking. The color and, of course, droplet reflections make this a very cool image indeed. My only suggestion is that you watch your corners. That triangle of dark in the upper left distracts just a tad from the overall effect.

I have a few questions for you, if you don't mind:

1) How did you light this subject?
2) Did you just hold a piece of glass up in front of the lens?
3. How did you get this image into a digital format? #143471

Very vivid colors in this photo. Good composition as well.

However, I'm curious - how did you manage to introduce such a shallow depth of field with such a small aperture (F16). I would assume that everything in the frame would be in focus. #143481

Actually how I did this shot is that I
bought a brand new 10 gallon fish
aquarium, put it on the side, waxed the
glass with car wax so the water would
bead up then clamped a 100 watt flood light from the side and put a bright
yellow Dahlia on the bottom of the
aquarium.
I put my camera on a tripod straight down within about 12" from the glass. The hard part is now getting all of the droplets in focus by using my DOF on my camera and leaving the flower out of focus. Easier said than done.
I used a Minolta Dimage Duel Scan III
scanner for digital with very little
adjustment with PS7.

You did some manipulations. I do my drops without manipulations and only with f/8 for DOF, cause I use Canon G3. Thanks. Very good shoot of yours. #165583

Fantastic imagination in setting up this shot and great use of depth of field. "WOW" hats off to you Paul.

Paul -
I love the spatial effects. I totally disagree that the dark triangle in the upper left is a distraction. In fact, it adds to the "suspended in space" feeling. I love the crisp vs. soft, brilliant foci of this Sci-fi gem. And the minimal number of colors makes it very intense. #319198
