Maryland Bay

Uploaded: February 28, 2014

Description

The Maryland window ("Religious Freedom in Maryland") in late afternoon sun. The window commemorates the Act of Toleration passed by the Maryland General Assembly way back in 1649, ending the strife between Protestants and Catholics by mandating religious tolerance of all Christian denominations. Several bishops appear; the first to be consecrated in America within the Catholic, Episcopal and Methodist churches. Captain John Smith appears in an open boat in the bottom center (recalling his 3,000 miles of exploration in such a boat, on the Cheseapeake Bay). Maryland flora and fauna can be found as well; a blue crab, an oriole, Black-Eyed Susans, etc.
This is from my first full day shooting with and exploring the fascinating capabilities of the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L tilt-shift lens. Here, I altered the focus plane to blur out, moving up the window.
