Here is something for the monthly challenge. These are milkweed seeds, that I have and some rocks from a trip to California. I used the table top light tent and some off camera lights.Dale Hardin January 21, 2014
That combination makes for a very appealing effect, Beth. I like the first and last images the best. A lot is lost in the bk and wht.this also brings back memories from World War 2. Everyone did their bit, and we kids used to collect milk weed pods and dragon flies. We were told that the milk weed pods were used in life vests and the dragon fly wings used in bomb sights. Don't know how true it was but we were exited just to be helping. #10952673

After a bit or research, I found out the milk weed story is true, but could find no basis in fact about the Dragonfly wings. #10952679Stephen Shoff January 21, 2014
Incredible Beth. To me, the blue on the rock makes it look like it was under water.I agree with Dale about the B&W on this one...the color is in integral component of the images effectiveness. #10952693

I am with you on that too-I prefer the color images. Those milkweed seeds are gorgeous. There is one seed in the first and last photos that is out of focus and is bugging me.If you reshoot, I would try shooting just one seed, and try to get that up close and really sharp.
I just want to see all that detail!!! #10952731

Thank you Dale and Stephen. I have a bunch of milk weed pods from this fall that I want to put out this spring so hopefully can get some started to attract some monarchs. #10952732Jeff E Jensen January 21, 2014
I agree with the others, the B&W doesn't do much for me, but the others are fantastic! #10952832Beth Spencer January 21, 2014
Thanks Jeff, it was fun.tf I am trying to figure out different ways to light things. I just thought I would try the black and white. #10952851Beth Spencer January 21, 2014
Elaine, I will try that the next time. I have to work 4 out of the next 5 days so it will probably not be until the first of the week. #10952905Rita K. Connell January 21, 2014
great subject and I love it against the black bg. I think you did a great job with the lighting. I with everyone else first and last is my favorite. and I think Elaine is on to something about just one.grrrrr when work gets in the way!!!! #10952990

I think these would be really cool shot against a white background using a light source from under them, like a light table. #10953099Anthony L. Mancuso January 23, 2014
I'm on board with the rest of the group Beth, I prefer the original post..you did get some good detail in the last shot but getting in even tighter will really bring it out... #10954021Kalena Randall January 23, 2014
Love this! I like the first the best, but all of them are really cool! Love the ideas you put together on this. #10954192Peter W. Marks January 25, 2014
As with the other guys I think the first image is the stand out; it has such beautiful colour, lighting and a much stronger composition than for instance the sea shell one. The shell one would benefit from the seed pods being towards the front of the composition. But back to the the first image; I like this so much that I have returned to it many times these past few days. I am going to fav this one Beth. #10955407Beth Spencer January 25, 2014
Thank you Petter, Rita , Kelena. Jeff, I am trying to talk Rocky into building me a light table, but if I shoot with a white background, will they show up? Tony, I will try to get in closer and maybe just one seed, but won't be til the first of next week. Work you know, just interferes with things I like doing! #10955954Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
