West Rose

Uploaded: January 12, 2014

Description

The 2011 earthquake which inflicted so much damage on the cathedral, brought with it a very rare opportunity; scaffolding has been suspended 75 feet above the floor, to allow inspections and repairs to be made on the vaulted ceiling. I was granted access to the platform, and it puts you on an even level with the massive, spectacular west rose window. Some 10,000 pieces of glass went into creating Rowan LeCompte's masterpiece, spanning 25 feet, 10 inches in diameter. It is an abstract design in which Rowan works off of different themes of creation. Spiral galaxies, rivers & streams, birdsong and the phases of the moon, among other concepts, are all referenced in the swirling colors and design.
