ISO 100, 60mm, -1EV, f/14, 1/3 sec.

This was from our fabulous Utah trip! I have to say, I am pretty proud of what I did here. This is a composite of 2 images-one with -1EV and the other -.3EV. I used the -1EV pic as the base because the colors in the sky looked better, and used the other picture to "fill in" the darker areas of the rock in the foreground and the jetty (to lighten these areas more). Sort of like HDR by hand.

Then I opened the shadows, sharpened w high pass filter, and increased the saturation just of the sky.

Pls feel free to critique as I am probably not done with this yet!

One more fun pic of the jetty. #10896291

That night was a blast, wasn't it? Like what you've done on these and that you are adventuring further and further into making the shot become your own. Like the second view as well, mainly because of the foreground and the light.

On this image I think there is still room to open it up some more. Try going to a levels layer, use the white eyedropper and click exactly in the center of the spiral.

It will be too light, but then reduce the opacity to about 50% to 60% for taste. #10896440

Yup, I agree with Dale, you are really close. Nice work.

That was a fun night, y'all should come back out :o)

By the way, I was out there a bout 6 weeks ago and the Jetty was almost completely dry. #10896597

I love the spiral shot; I'd be proud of myself if this was mine :)
I like the sky in the orginal post best, but think the water would be a bit brighter. #10896621

This is great Elaine. I did not achieve a shot I liked of the Spiral Jetty, but I did not get one anywhere close to as nice as this. Like the POV and the blue and orange combination. #10897398

Thanks Elaine for re-awakening my interest in the Spiral Jetty from when I first saw Jeff's images of it some time back. We have so much interesting stuff on Phellos that it got filed away in my head and I forgot all about it. Now, thanks to you; a large mug of strong coffee; one of my moggies on my lap anchoring me firmly to the chair; the quietness of the five o'clock hour of a still dark morning I have not only enjoyed all your shots Elaine but went researching online and know a heck of a lot about Robert Smithson the artist; the location; the logistics of creating this work in 1970 (the artist, two assistants, 2 dump trucks a frontloader, a tractor and six days work moving 6600 tons of rock and earth from a nearby hillside). Wow! 1500ft long by 15ft wide and was submerged not long after construction but re-emerged as the lake level dropped in the early 1970's
Should make us feel very humble when we agonize over moving a few pixels around a screen! Here is an excellent website on the Spiral Jetty- enjoy.
And thank you once more Elaine.

very nice work Elaine I like each one for different reasons. I think I would have to pick the middle one for my favorite out of the three. your additional shot is very nice also I like the lighting.

Which I could have been there. #10899715
