Geared for Power

Uploaded: November 04, 2013

Description

This locomotive engine is now used at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in West Virginia. But the steam locomotive is different from what most of us have seen. This has a complex gearing system with vertical pistons that drive a shaft that powers many wheels. This gives the engine very high torque and a sort of locomotive all-wheel drive system that was important for pulling heavy cars loaded with logs out of the mountains to the mill in the town of Cass. These engines are quite slow but powerful - truly the "Little Engines that Could." Cass State Park is an interesting place to experience history and take a ride on a train through very scenic mountain country.
