Melanie, the first thing you need to do is study the movements and habits of the fish. Trying to capture them when they are moving across the aquarium is sometimes quite frustrating. Fish have habits and places they feel comfortable at and these are the places that you set up and pre-focus on. Then when they move into that position, you trip the shutter. This is easier on a tripod. Its not to say that you cannot follow then around and get good photos, its just more difficult.

I would read the camera manual to see if that camera has a flash sync shutter speed setting. If not try a shutter at 1/60 and adjust the aperture accordingly. If that camera has a macro setting, use it with f 8 or 11 and move the flash back or forward to adjust the light. If your camera dosen't have a macro setting, then use the telephoto setting and open the aperture up to about f 4.8 or so and do the same with the light more or less.

You also will need a separate flash unit set about 45 degrees to the glass, otherwise you will get the flash in the photo. This can be set on another tripod or light stand. I like to have it about 12 inches to the right and about 12 inches above the camera. Experiment with this setup and modify it to your liking. JMW #4938
