This was taken in Temple Bar, Dublin, through the glass of our hotel window. Temple Bar is quite the party place, and my guess is this woman was getting ready to go out with her friends (whom were sitting on this patio).

Due to the angle this photo was taken, I am having trouble figuring out which lines should be straight. I chose the vertical line on the left of the patio structure. #1542532

This is a very nicely composed and clear candid, Elaine. I like it. As far as the lines are concerned, I would suggest correcting the horizontal perspective.

This would maintain your vertical line (a good choice on your part), and level the top line above her head. The balcony would stay as it is, and should be, due to the angle you shot this.

Having a strong vertical and a strong horizontal line that results, would take away the visual tension that multiply angles create, while still leaving the balcony line to satisfy the perspective and angle. #10826398

On shots of this kind, I tend to straighten the most central vertical available. If I want to deal with horizontals, or still tilting verticals towards the edges, I then use the distort tool in Photoshop. #10826632

She looks thrilled about that cigarette. . . #10826932

I will defer to Dale and Stephen on the perspective straightening issues as I have a terrible time with this and go through lots of gyrations on my shots that have these issues and still have trouble getting them to look right.

It is a nice candid and Jeff is right about the cigarette.

I'll leave the straightening issue to Dale and Stephen as well. I have trouble getting images straight that have a clear horizon line.

She does look very "excited"

I actually like the angle this was shot at. It give the feeling of looking into someone's world from the outside. :) #10827285

I really like this shot for the very reason teresa mentioned It give the feeling of looking into someone's world from the outside. this is a great capture #10827451

You guys are funny about the cigarette. I thought she had a lot of character...

Anyways, I am a little confused about fixing the distortion. Dale, I was able to use the distortion tool to make the line above her head level, but it didn't look right because the balcony still sloped down to the left. Don't we want these two lines to be parallel? I think I am missing something... #10827481

Elaine Hessler August 31, 2013

I think this is what you meant-let me know... #10827486

Elaine Hessler August 31, 2013

Ugh, just noticed the vertical lines of the door frame are now leaning... #10827491

Here's another try. This can drive one batty! #10827497

Dale Hardin August 31, 2013

Actually Elaine, the top straight and the balcony slanted down to the right was what I meant.

If you used the horizontal perspective tool in the lens correction filter, that is what you would get.

Having them both straight works also, but does not reflect the angle this was shot from. #10828053

Beth Spencer August 31, 2013

Elaine not being able to keep anything straight I think you did a good job!
This is a very interesting shot, and I have to agree she does look like she made need a different brand of cigarette or something else. #10828249

Ok here you go Dale. Since I have four versions now, I am curious which one you guys like. Feel free to leave a comment if you can stop back. This could be interesting..... #10828810

lisa anderson September 01, 2013

Holy, those edits can sure change the lines. I like the last one you did best. I love the bow on her head along with her expression. #10828815

Susan Williams September 01, 2013

This is a great candid shot, Elaine. I like version d the best as it gives more perceptual depth to the balcony. My impression was that she is just getting in after a night of partying, but you say she was just getting ready to go. :) #10828852

I get the distinct feeling that few of us understand a word of what the old geezer is on about. "..visual tension that multiple angles create" I have no idea whether he is saying that is a good thing or a bad thing. I worry about the old fella; all that travelling is affecting his brain. This is an image of a young women with a problem and the architecture is purely incidental- Paddy hasn't phoned her and so she is needing a few drags on her fag to calm her nerves. (bet that made a few of you blink. :0)
But as for the images;- a, b, and c, work for me Elaine. "d" looks as if the balcony is falling down. #10829017

Dale Hardin September 01, 2013

LOL! I think your diagnosis of her problem is spot on, Peter. :o) #10829126

Elaine, I think C works, but I never get anything level so I am not the one to ask! #10829791
