Wilson's Phalarope

Uploaded: May 03, 2013

Description

The Wilson's Phalarope is a very interesting bird. The female (pictured) is larger than the male and is more colorful during the mating season. The female also courts the male. The female leaves the nest after laying the eggs and leaves the rest of the work to the male.
This photo was taken in the Black Hawk Wildlife Refuge near Lake View, Iowa. My research indicated that this bird is not often seen in our state so I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to photograph it.
