Description

In contrast to the geological timeline, human history in Antarctica represents perhaps a millisecond flash of activity. And yet the impact of human activity on this continent and its wildlife has been astonishing and profound. Despite the size of this continent, the environment is delicate and is easily unbalanced. Derelict sites scattered throughout the Antarctic and the sub-Antarctic islands testify to the strength of human desire to conquer and plunder. Whaling, sealing, and fishing have severely altered the Antarctic ecology. Only the frozen winters prevented miners and drillers from having their way.

The whales did survive and are recovering; the whaling ships of death are idly rusting.
