D7000 Sigma 70-200@200MM F7.I SS 1/3200 SS
ISO 1600 I WAS SET FOR FLIGHT SHOTS SATURDAY AT THE IBIS ROOKERY WHEN I SAW THIS . My head is on a swivel when at the end of the trail in the rookery . You stand on a 20 foot wide low dike between two areas of swamp. In front of you is the Main Colony and OPEN DARK WATER. Behind the water is completely covered w/water hyacinth, just a mass of green. The gator must have grabbed the vulture before I arrived & been holding it underwater. It's flock mates jumped back from the waters edge just before I noticed the Gator move up the bank. He retreated back to the water as soon as he noticed me just a few seconds later. Waited an hour but he did not return. MADE MY DAY !!!
Exif: F Number: 7.1, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/3200 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 1600, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 200.00 mm, Model: NIKON D7000

Ma nature at her finest, great capture of this little piece of the food chain Jack. His patience paid off, but after the feathers and bones this is probably just a little snack for him! #1511539R. J. Laudenbacher January 28, 2013
A great capture of mother nature at work, Jack. What a thing to see! I would have been trying to scare the other birds off! #10541451Kevin P. Kreischer January 28, 2013

Cool shot, I liked your comment "head on a swival". I had my share of that in my Yellowstone/Teton days. Now not so much. RB #10542499John Connolly January 28, 2013
Lunch al fresco Jack! A remarkable sight beautifully captured! I have nothing but respect for these big snapping lizards! #10542587Ann Coates January 28, 2013
I know it is nature but I still find it hard with things like this. I could not have watched at all. You captured an amazing moment Jack. We all have to eat to survive. #10542703Michelle Alton January 28, 2013
Well, for one thing, the black vulture is a beautiful creature, compared with the turkey vulture. But in the wild, it's dog-eat-dog! Or something like that. What fascinates me more than the gator eating the vulture, is the OTHER vultures seemingly feeling sorry there.
Or were they just waiting to eat the leftovers?
There's one less lovely pet for some unlucky Floridian! #10542925

I'd find it hard to watch as well but that's the way things work in nature. Great timing and capture, Jack! #10542950Jeffrey R. Bange January 28, 2013
When it comes to the gators Jack you always seem to be in the right place at the right time, great capture my friend. #10543264Robert K. Bemus January 28, 2013
Glad Michelle is coping with this shot like a trooper. Wish they had flying gators at my ponds to take care of the thousands of crows that return there every evening. Great wildlife shot!! #10543305Colette M. Metcalf January 29, 2013
