Nice. Was this taken with your rectilinear lens? This is gorgeous. I like the low angle. You can still see the jetty. #1506793

Jeff E Jensen January 03, 2013

Yup, taken with the 14mm, and, it is actually a stitch of about 14 images, so it gives some funky distortions to the Jetty and to the distant shoreline. #10497005

Rita K. Connell level-classic January 03, 2013

this is a great capture Jeff. but help to understand what you have done. HDR is several image combined. but you said 14 images stitch what do you mean by that.? #10497300

Jeff E Jensen January 03, 2013

Sorry, this is not an HDR image, it is 14 images, shot vertically and then stitched together as a panorama. If you've never been there, you'd probably have no idea that the hill that is on the left of the frame is almost straight east from where I stood, and the mountains that you can see in the far distance in about the center of the frame are actually south west of where I stood. In this image, the rocks on the left and the rocks on the right of the frame look like they come together where I'm standing. In reality, they run in an almost straight line. I've included a second image of the Jetty for comparison. #10497305

Dale Hardin January 03, 2013

Very interesting shot Jeff. I really like the dedication and work put into this shot. A great lesson in creativity that really inspires me to try to achieve more.

Had it been me, I'd probably have gone about 1/2 as far as you did, so as to retain a bit more reality of the scene. Of the two, I like the other image better.

One thing about the composite that stands out is the obvious distortion resulting in a concave horizon. The other thing is the opposing leading lines into the composition that fight for the viewers attention.

In spite of that, this is definitely something I want to try. I do this often with three images for a pano, but using images horizontally and vertically is a leap that you've inspired me to attempt. #10497423

Debbra Bailey January 03, 2013

Very cool! Thanks for posting the second pic as a reference! #10497680

Beth Spencer January 03, 2013

It is a beautiful shot either way! I like the idea of the vertical panoroma and one day will try it. It is a very interesting effect! Thanks for the reference shot. #10497862

That is so cool! Photo-sewing! How long did it take? #10498685

Elaine Hessler January 04, 2013

Very cool indeed! There is an amazing article on the sequoias in the dec issue of national geographic. The front cover is a composite of 120 photos of The President. You can see it come together on the iPad app (my favorite app). Lots of work! And very cool, of course. #10498693

Debbie E. Payne January 04, 2013

You and your amazing creativity, Jeff! I like both images but I think I like the first one best for it's impact.

Elaine -- I will have to go back to my December issue. I don't have the iPad app for NG yet. #10499646

Elaine Hessler January 04, 2013

The NG app is free and so is the magazine through the app if you already have a subscription. I think it opens in "Newstand". There is so much extra it comes to life! #10499751

Way beyond my creativity Jeff.

Thanks, all!

Peter - I read all of your comments with and english accent, not sure if I'd call it posh though :o)

Deb - when the Bailey clan makes a stop in Utah this summer, we'll head out here for sunset and some light painting. #10500606

Oh gosh young Jeff. I have been here twenty years last month but the ladies still ask me to 'just talk' and they sigh. It had me thinking I sounded like Hugh Grant but perhaps I had better watch more Downton Abbey on PBS and practice. #10500835
