Description

Otter Point holds a geological mystery. The rock on the left is about 150 million years old, dating back to the Jurassic period. The mudsstone on the right, which sits on top of the Jurassic rock, are Pleistocene marine terraces that are only 2 million years old. Between the two layers, there are 148 million years missing. Geologists believe these missing layers were on top of a tectonic plate (Pacific Plate) and was scraped off as it collided with another tectonic plate (North American Plate). Mystery solved?

Quote of the Day : “The worse the country, the more tortured it is by water and wind, the more broken and carved, the more it attracts fossil hunters, who depend on the planet to open itself to us. We can only scratch away at what natural forces have brought to the surface.” – Jack Horner
