The Bridge Called Brooklyn

Brooklyn Bridge was completed on May 24, 1883 and is the longest suspension bridge in America. It connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn stretching 5,989 feet (1825 meters) over the East River. The bridge supports automobile traffic in both directions on a level just below this level, the pedestrian and bicycle level. It was designed by German immigrant John Augustus Roebling. Before construction began Roebling met with an accident and soon died. His son Washington took charge of the project and shortly grew ill as a result of decompression sickness. His wife then took on the task of overseeing construction with the help of her bedridden husband.

Well thank you Michelle. Oh to live close-by the most exciting city I have ever experienced, where there is a picture everywhere you look. I enjoy the history associated with the building of this bridge. I'm in awe that this structure still stands, one of the first suspension bridges built in America and one of several built by J.A.
