The Hayman fire from 2002 burned over 138,000 acres 35 miles out of Colorado Springs. The forestry worker who started the fire (during a burn ban) was sentenced to 6 years in federal prison. It was speculated that she started the fire in order to put it out and be known as the hero who saved the forest.
