Like the way you have the sharpest penquin in the ROT possition. Good compositional move.

There does seem to be a WB issue but if this is a raw image it's easily corrected, or you could just remove the color cast to warm it up a bit.

Also might try opening the shadows some and add a touch of high pass filtering.

Where was this? These look like New Zealand penguins. #1485205

Dale, these are Rumbolt(sp?) penguins taken at the Calgary Zoo. And of course I wasn't shooting in RAW as we were there taking photos for the Master Gardener Class tree ID course. The penguins were having so much fun outside on a beautiful fall day that we just fired off a fast round. And forgive me for not remembering but when I do the high pass filter do I set an opacity level? #10314544

Dale Hardin September 08, 2012

They are Humboldt Penquins native to Peru and Argentina. They are related to the ones that are New Zealand.

The best way to do it is to duplicate your image and apply the overlay blend. Your image will look lousy but that's OK. Now activate the filter/other/highpass filter and it will change the second layer to grey and you can now move the slider and view the changes to the image in real time.

And since the high pass is on another layer, you can apply the opacity later if the result turns out to be too strong. #10314565

I knew it was Humbolt not Rumbolt...lol! Ok here is the high pass filter #10314699

Ok Dale just did this with another photo and I think I am finally seeing what this does! It may be a bit extreme here but I am finally getting it! Little slow but moving forward... #10314709

Dale Hardin September 08, 2012

That's the beauty of doing it that way on another layer. If it's extreme, just lower the opacity on the layer. By George!! I do believe she's got it!! #10314833

Thank you Dale for your patience. I don't get to spend as much time doing this as I would like, cause life just gets in the way! I just want you to know how much I appreciate the time you take to explain things (sometimes over and over again) Cheers! Kristin #10314857

Looking good Kristin. Opening the shadows improved the shot a lot.

The fly shot is spectacular! #10314866

Cute penguins! I like the edits. If you wanted to you could clean up the dark spots in the upper right had corner. They're not that big of a deal though.

The fly shot is awesome. His little wings are irredicent #10314905

Kristin I have had a lot of luck with this filter. I didn't know about it until Dale explained it to me.. #10316241

Peter W. Marks September 13, 2012

I like these Kristen and as with the other folk I have been back to the fly image several times. Tell me, did you use auto or manual focus as which ever, you certainly nailed it. Excellant work! #10321353

Kristin Duff September 14, 2012

@Peter, I believe it was manual focus with live view! #10323125
