Really interesting image Peter! Is there a filter on this? #1485131

Michael Kelly level-classic September 07, 2012

I like it Peter. Clarity and comp are very nice.

Looks a bit noisy to me (may be a filter) and the skin tones look just a touch orange. Perhaps just a touch of desat would fix the tones or mess with the hue slider slightly. #10313056

I like this one Peter. It reminds me of Devin, who spent all his free time drawing. I wish I had a good shot of him drawing. :)

I think Mike's suggestions are good ideas. :) #10313400

Many thanks Debbra, Mike and Teresa. We are in the middle of severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch and in the last hour we have lost power three times. What a bore when I had to reset the alarm clock, the coffee pot clock, the microwave oven and the water-softner clockthree times. Thank heavens for propane gas so I can now go cook supper but any adjustments to the image of Elizabeth's hand will have to wait until tomorrow. I don't think I will be able to do any thing about the random color noise as any attempt to soften that will just spoil the rest of the detail. I am only seeing it on the black cover of her sketch pad so I shall pretend it was a speckled cover and live with it.

I meant to add that this last image is the one from which I cropped the 'hands' image and was shot at 1/1000sec, f3.5; ISO 100 so any noise would not be a product of a long exposure or a high ISO.

The color and noise look good on the original. Perhaps just not quite enough pixels for the severe crop? #10313585

I really like this one Peter!! I hope your power will stay on and you all will be safe! #10313592

Anthony L. Mancuso September 07, 2012

I like the comp on this one Peter, although I do think the poor resolution caused by the severe crop is an issue. I also think I would go monotone with it as there quite a few colors competing with the hands.. #10313614

Nice entry for the challenge Peter. I think Tony is right about the severe crop effecting the outcome. However, a 50% desaturation on the result should clear up most of the issues.

Also, don't be fooled into thinking just because you shoot at 100 ISO and a fast shutter speed, you would be devoid of noise. #10313681

Very cool, Peter! The noise didn't bother me till someone was kind enough to point it out. . . #10313687

I am sorry I forgot to answer your original question Deb. Yes, I used Topaz Adjust 5>Classic Collection>Photo Pop. And now I am paranoic about the 'noise' for the very reason That Jeff pointed out:0)
I am not sure I was thinking too clearly about the purposes of this image beyond just 'sketching hands' in the way an artist might make very rough charcoal or pencil sketches and wasn't concerned about color or sharpness, or exposure or noise.
But for Mike and Dale I tried a bit of desaturation and that didn't work for me. I then tried your idea about mono Tony and using my PSE9 tried- Convert to B&W >Style- Scenic Landscape and fiddled with the sliders very slightly.
I actually like this effect and it seems to cover the tonal range quite well.
What we are left in no doubt about is that severe cropping is not so good. There's no point in having 15megapixels and then throwing most of them away.
And thank you for the concerns over our storms Beth. My weather radio was bleeping and flashing but we dodged the bullet and no harm done. #10314405

Peter, the desaturation suggestion was aimed at the image you posted. I didn't know you had applied a filter although after seeing the original it was obvious.

Of course, using the original as a base, desaturation would not be required. The suggestion was only a stop gap. :o) #10314497

Rita K. Connell level-classic September 08, 2012

peter this is a great crop for the challenge this month. I really like the feeling that it makes you want to look to see what she is drawing. I do wonder what it would be like without the filter being added to it. #10314688

Peter W. Marks September 08, 2012

Your wish is my command Rita. Elizabeth was sketching the 'blockhouse' at Polruan which is the tiny village opposite Fowey at the mouth of the River Fowey (pronounced "Foy") There was a similar blockhouse on the opposite side of the river and a chain connected the two which could be raised to prevent pirates or the enemy (Usually Spain )from raiding the town. They were built in the 1400s.
Elizabeth was sat on the rocks just to the left of the blockhouse.

Pete --I can see what they are saying about the tight crop but I like both images; color and black and white. Maybe the black and white wins out for me. I was thinking that this was probably Elizabeth. #10315769
