Prairie Dog (Cynomys)
Uploaded: September 06, 2012
I did not take this from the train. Was taken at Fairmont Banff Springs but I took the opportunity to introduce him on the Prairie. There are five species of Prairie dogs and I think this is the Utah species (parvidens) which has reddish brown fur with a white tipped tail. They are named for their habitat and warning call which sounds similar to a small dog barking. They live in towns, are social, well organized and have a communication system. They live in burrows 16 to 30 feet long, 6 to 10 feet below ground which have specialized chambers for certain purposes. They are on the USA threatened species list.

Since my 24-105 lens was broken (still being repaired) I was limited to using 17-40 EF L lens. Took this at 40mm, ISO 800 at F/10 to get 1/250 sec at -0.67ev. I added the peripheral blur to enhance attention. #1484859Robert R. Goodman September 06, 2012

Emile, use to try and catch these when I was a small kid, made a lasso and placed it over the hole, when they popped their heads up, zap, then I would let go of the string so an not to be bitten #10311247Jeff Robinson September 06, 2012
