Centennial Spirit

Uploaded: February 06, 2012

Description

Perhaps the most famous car mascot ever created, the Rolls Royce "Spirit of Ecstasy" appeared 100 years ago today. Prior to her appearance,
customers could attach any hood ornament they chose, and Rolls Royce began to worry about customers' choices being inappropriate for the
reputation and quality of the vehicles. Sculptor Charles Sykes was chosen to create this statuette, having sculpted a mascot earlier for Lord Montagu's
vehicle (said to be modeled on Montagu's secret mistress.) Sykes based his new mascot on a modification of Montagu's sculpture.
This version was attached to a massive 2012 Rolls Royce sedan featured at a local car show.
