I love what he said when you were taking his picture...that's just as good as the picture itself! Even though his head is over a dark area the texture of his hair really makes it stand out. I'm thinking his face could be brought out a bit more with that shirt. It's a really powerful shirt! I'm not sure, but maybe a selective blend on the face of a low oppacity color dodge. :~) #1405467

thanks y'all...

this was actually the first year that I even managed to get "real" first day of school pics. i'm hoping to keep up the tradition but we'll see how things go next year.

I would love to make your changes Aimee but i'm not understanding the "selective blend" I have CS5 but I still do most of my editing in Corel Paintshop. if you could explain a little more, i'll be happy to try them. #9647698

You can either select only his face and put it on another layer by using control J in PS as long as CS is the same as PSE in that respect. Or just do a masking layer on a duplicate of the image and do a color dodge blending mode. You'll need to lower the opacity of course and if you want to just paint it on his face instead of removing it from the rest of the shot you will need to make the masking layer black. Then use a white brush to paint it on his face. I hope that makes sense....I'm just not as good as some of the others with giving directions. Heck half the time I don't even know what I'm doing! lol #9647833

May I make a suggestion? For your first day of school pictures, try taking them in front of the same thing every year. That way you can see how much your kids grow.

Every year I took the boy's first day of school pictures in front of our bookshelf. It's fun to look at early pictures and compare them to last year's pictures. They really grew a lot! :) #9647834

What a great smile. I like the suggestions and the same location idea of Teresa's sounds great.

Since this is supposed to be a remembrance shot and not a fine art type portrait I think it works pretty well as shown though I would love to see the suggestions of our fine portrait people. #9647930

okay, so I tried the edits Aimee suggested in PSE. I do most of my edits in paint shop but i'm trying to learn PSE and CS so that someday, I might only need one program to edit. but anyways...

i selected his face, did the layer and then applied the color dodging at a really low opacity. then I thought it looked a little too red so I opened it in paint shop and took the reduced the red shadow just a little.

this was just a nice snapshot to capture the moment. i'm going to try to do this every year but we'll see if that happens.
