Description

Gros Cap Reef Light is my first Canadian light and perhaps the strangest aid to navigation I have seen yet. The front of the lighthouse crib is shaped similar to a snow plow in order to withstand the extreme stresses placed on it by ice flowing by it. Accessible only by boat or plane it marks the entrance to the upper St. Mary's River from Lake Superior's White Fish Bay and has an attached helo pad. Built in 1953 the light was fully automated sometime during the 1980's. The boat I was on was rocking pretty badly and even with VR and a fast shutter speed most of the pictures were not salvageable.

Thanks for the light house tour Greg, I think I will have to pass on seeing this one, interesting info. I wonder what they used before 1953 #9601330

Ron, my understanding is prior to 1953 there was a lightship stationed there but it was too difficult and expensive to maintain on station so they built this strange lighthouse. It was manned year round by keepers but no families were allowed. #9601348
