Depressed or Sulking

Uploaded: April 28, 2011

Description

A social outcast or self-imposed isolation. This one kept to himself and while the rest of the clan frolicked and socialized. Not having skill as an animal psychologist, I can only guess at possible reasons for his behavior. Ft. Worth Zoo. Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM at 400mm

Dan, I didn't get a chance to comment on this photo. You really captured the animals emotion here... I truly feel bad for him and how alone he must feel. He seems to have a lot on his mind. Very emotional capture! #1373919

Thanks Misty. The one image alone does not reveal it as well as the whole observation of his behavior while we were there does. Though someone before had suggested shyness, I think it was more than that. There really was a sense of isolation as though he has been shunned by the others. Sure, some of the sense may be my own inejecting my imagination into it but I think it was more than that. Almost a cowering behavior as we might observe in a dog which has been abused by its owners. I thought it was a sad thing too.

Now whether it was an ongoing thing or maybe he had just been given a "time out" for the day, who knows. Later on the female with the baby climed up on the same ledge and this one scooted off to the other side of it to put space between them. He tended to become very agitated and acted as though he was "telling her off" and she actually ignored him. Strange indeed. It would be interesting to be able to know what these animials are thinking. #9384746

Oh Dan, after studying your image here and reading your words and Carla's, I instinctly thought the same thing!
Well captioned! What a mood/expression you had a chance to catch... I know I would of not wanted to move from him or her- I would of wanted to try to coax this one in some kind of 'It's okay' conversation!
Your photography skills with your zoo animals are impressive GREATLY... WOW factor, if you ask me! Excellent Capture!!!
