Description

---
Before and After
-------
November 25 in Doylestown was drizzly most of the day, with blah overcast skies. A weekday scene provided lots of hustle, bustle, and street clutter.
--------
I had to do a LOT to this image: (1) Straighten extensively using the Transform/Warp tool. (2)Swap the sky using Apply Image repeatedly on the blue channel--complex, but quick once you "get it." Then I had to play with blend modes to bring the iron work back in front of the sky (3)TOPAZ Adjust to enhance the detail in the sky (4) TOPAZ Detail to make the building pop (4) clone out distractions (mainly the car).
----
Was it worth it?

The Doyestown Intelligencer Building on 10 East Court Street.
---
This intricate "old lady" was designed and built in 1876 by the team of Thomas L. Cernea and David E. Supplee the famous Philadelpia architects. It is an impressive example of the Second Empire style and the Queen Anne style. The Second Empire style can be seen in the mansard roof and projecting central tower. Some interesting aspects of the Queen Anne style seen here are the white belt courses and carved keystones, the balconies, the crowned tower, the tall thin windows, and elaborate ornamentation.
-------
The short light posts in the foreground surround a Civil War memorial (obelisk) that stands in the intersection of Court Street and Main Street, directly in front of the Courthouse. #1334274

Lots of work, maybe, but what a great result! A wonderful building, too! #9090439

Kate Jackson December 10, 2010

Probably not a wall hanger but definitely worth it Michelle. Pleasant to look at, great PS experience for you and also for us to read how you did it. I can easily understand playing with blend modes to brig the ironwork back but will certainly have to look into your apply image on the blue channel. So I am making notes. #9090440

Michelle Alton December 10, 2010

The "Blue Channel" masking technique was covered by Dave Cross in the CS5 one-day seminar tour. I would imagine he has a tutorial on the NAPP site by now, and it's SO worth it! I could try to explain it (with a scan of the workbook page) and my own notes if anyone would like to try it. Send me a BP mail and I'll respond with my email address.

Boy, I'll say it was! This is marvelous DD work, Michelle! I, too, love reading before and after posts to see how others have processed their images. It is so instructive. This has your signature 'look' about it. Wonderful detail and clarity along with superb color and textures. I have no idea how to replace a sky using Apply Image especially since I have not learned to work in channels much. But this is a terrific 'restoration'! #9093458
