Description

Erie Land Lighthouse is not one of the easier lighthouses to photograph. If you shoot from the east the power lines cut right across the lighthouse which is distracting. From the north or south you are just too close and keystoning is a problem, so from the east is your best choice. I stood on the flat stump of a large tree that had been cut down. This site has an interesting history as this is the third lighthouse constructed on this spot. The first two were undermined by improper foundations for the soil conditions the lighthouses were built on. This lighthouse was completed in 1867 but was deemed unnecessary in 1880 because of the nearby Presque Isle Lighthouse which was completed in 1873. In 1885 the lighthouse was relit at the request of local mariners but taken out of commission again in 1899. In 1990 a new lantern room was installed and on December 26, 1999, exactly one hundred years after the light was extinguished, it was again relit.

As soon as I saw this image, I thought, "This must have been a really difficult shot!" You accomplished it perfectly, and your description is almost poetry! #9050543

Saw the thumbnail and had to comment on this one, Gregory -- I love this lighthouse, but it's next to impossible to get a good photo of it. Yours is just great! #9051047

I agree...I have been there numerous times, but have never taken a photo of it that I really liked. You got a good one here. Excellent POV and comp...works well as a vertical. An excellent addition to your collection of excellent lighthouse photos. Well done, Greg. #9051230
