Mississippi Tree

Along the mississippi river near Minneapolis Mn. 30 sec exposure. I thought the roots on this tree were pretty cool.

G'day *CLAY*!Pretty cool indeed! I really like the gnarled and twisted shapes anf texture of the roots and the very supportive background of the mirror like river.
I strongly suggest the following to give this very good B&W more punch by adding more emphasis to the roots themselves. (Justathort and one man's opinion).:
1. Crop down from the top so the top edge of frame eliminates all traces of sky. This them removes the very distracting and unnecessary area of bright sky and presents the viewer with a concentrated view of your subject.
2. Even though the slope of the river banks is due to perspective, when seen in the more detailed view of a photograph it looks as though the banks are titled. Levelling them removes that subconscious distraction and is not purely aesthetic.
Your focus and depth of field are very good and your B&W proccessing has rendered good contrast, highlights and shadows and a good tonal range.
The central composition works well here due to the nature of the spreading roots.
A good example of well though out and controlled low light photography.

Hi Clay;Dennis has presented an opinion with merit. I'd enjoy seeing what these changes would look like.

These kind of trees always catch my eye! Great B & W shot! #9026894Helen Dittrich November 15, 2010
I really like this in B&W.. its a beautiful tree, with the roots being the focus. I think Id be inclined to crop down to the top of the river line which would bring your eyes right to the beauty of the image. :) ahhh I see that I have actually thought along the same lines as Dennis.. love to see how it would look if you get to 'revise' :) #9034776Dianna Murphy November 16, 2010
Really nice lines and textures. Good job on the framing and tones. #9042928Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
