robber fly captures grasshopper
Uploaded: July 19, 2010
Diptera : Asilidae
In my humble opinion, these are one of the most fascinating insects out there. Today, I was trying to capture an image of one of the grasshoppers buzzing around me in short jump-flight combinations as I disturbed them. Suddenly this robber fly came into action and captured the grasshopper in mid flight. Heavy with prey-in-mouth it landed in the grass, and gave me the opportunity to capture this image. For a pretend entomologist like me, this was a most satisfying moment.
