Quo Vadis
Uploaded: July 09, 2010
The series grows... Looking very inquisitive, the Ardea alba (Great Egret) in the foreground watches another of its kind land on an opposite shore in a quiet backwater on a late autumn afternoon.
('Quo Vadis?' is a Latin phrase meaning 'Wither goest thou?')
Shot from the shore of my quiet backwater at Lake Cathie, NSW, Australia.
Canon EOS D60 & Canon USM 100-300mm Lens: RAW, f/5.6 @ 1/180sec, 115mm, ISO 100, Hand held.
Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3.
Enjoy!

THE MAKING OF 'Quo Vadis':I heard the call of the wild and took off down the coast on a solo expedition to Lake Cathie hoping that Mother Nature would smile on me and I was not to be disappointed.
The bird in the distance was actually standing where the bird is in the foreground before I could make a shot. Our foreground Egret had flown in and chased the other one away. It seems that not only do these birds have a well established hierarchy but they also suffer from 'The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side Syndrome'. I have observed three Great Egrets 'frog hop' from islet to islet as each in turn is chased off by another and they are not very kind about it either.
There were a few Egrets hanging around the area that afternoon and eventually one landed on the islet nearest my location. I was still setting up my camera when the star of the photograph flew over my head, landed next to the other bird and after a short skirmish, sent it off to the other side of the lake. I just had enough time to compose the shot and make it just before the bird landed. It is at times like this that I know I am truly blessed.
Enjoy!
