Description

Rabun Gap, Georgia
Mary Hambidge built this working water powered gristmill on her property in 1935. Ms. Hambidge is the founder of the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Scienes. The Hambidge Center is an artists' community situated on 600 acres of natural forests, woodlands, and streams down the road from the mill. The mill was designed for farmers and neighbors to use and corn meal as well as livestock feed was made at the mill. Woody Malot is the Miller and it is open 12 noon to 4 pm the first Saturday of every month. The mill occupies a site that has been a gristmill since the first settlers came to Betty Creek Valley in the 1820’s. The mill has been renovated three times—the last time being in the 1980’s. The wooden spooked wheel was converted to the present metal wheel in the 1960’s.
