Description

Came across several beautiful horses today while I was out looking for some flowers. Needless to say, I didn't get many flower shots!

I love images of horses. They are absolutely the most beautiful creatures. But I see you found the same problem I always have when I find some. All I ever get are shots of them eating. Would love to find some that are a bit frisky.

LOL... horses are hungry! We had a few across the road from us back in Utah a few days ago, Randy took Josie across the street to see them... she was slightly terrified when they spotted her and started over to say hey!

Lovely shot Christie!! What a beautiful colour she/he is! Don't ya wish you had that colour of hair!!!! #8533072

Beautiful horse Christie. The suggestion I have is to get some shots as Dale suggested and see if you can get them in early mourning or late afternoon light which will be less harsh and give a much more pleasing overall look to this beautiful animal.

There is nothing wrong with what you captured here for the conditions, but Since you know where they are some additional shots might provide you an opportunity for some great photos. #8533278

Yup, those horses sure do love to eat. But I can imagine being that large and having to satisfy ones appetite with only grass would be quite a task.

I think this is a nice simple shot, if you wanted to make the lighting a little less harsh you could tone down the highlights a little. Also might want to decrease the saturation in the yellow channel some. #8534202

Yup, what they said. #8534240

My favorite subject. And this guy is a big handsome fellow. The light is a little harsh and I have found with this color and how healthy and shiny it is makes it difficult to get a good light

Yep horses eat 24/7. That is the way they are designed. To catch them doing anything other than eating go to a barn where they ride, to try to get them to do anything in a field may get you in trouble with their owners. And unless you know the horse could give you some unexpected situations. #8535167

What a beautiful horse....so clean...someone must have been grooming lately. I like the soft glow you have about this one. As for getting shots that are more animated you generally need to have a few more horses around and then wait...and wait.....they usually have moments of play or pick on each other. :~) #8536521

christie this is a great picture of the horse, but I must be the odd man out I find the light a bit harsh on the whole picture. but for a fix that not where I am very good at giving advise. #8537717

I agree that the light is a bit harsh but now you know where he "lives" and can go back and get some nice "magic light" pictures. I rarely get horse shots so I think this was a lucky event. Flowers are everywhere. Horses, not always. #8539892

Thanks so much for the ideas and suggestions! I got bogged down with car issues this week and now my car works, but my wallet has been lightened considerably!
Tony, I couldn't figure out the color issue on this until you said to tone down the yellow. I kept trying to tone down the green and even tried the master. The yellow worked like a charm.....or at least I think it did. ;)
I would love to go back and take pictures of these horses but these are recovering patients at the Univ of IL's Equine Hospital, so they are generally only out to pasture for a day or 2 before they are returned to their owners. Will check back for some new patients from time to time though! #8540198

Christie, that worked well.

Sorry about your car issues, seems nothing with them is inexpensive.

I have heard that this Equine hospital is good, and talk about lightening your wallet. Any time an animal this big needs a hospital it is major. #8540215

O yes I like the latest version much better! Cars suck.....but than again do you want to go back to horse and buggy??? #8541274

Christie R. Bielss April 17, 2010

This is a top-notch animal hospital....with top notch prices, that's for sure!

Hmmmmm, Aimee. I see tons and tons of Amish here where we live. Of course then we'd always griping about the price of hay, feed and blacksmith services. Although, that horse and buggy looks mighty enticing....well, except when it's cold and snowy.....or raining.....or windy.....or hot....or tornado season....hmmm.....think I'll stick with the car. ;P #8541356

Tony's suggestion worked well with this shot. It looks a lot better now despite the harsh mid-day lighting :)
I, too, will stick with a car even though I think horses are so beautiful...cars are just too easy!
Sorry to hear you had trouble with yours though :( #8541547

Christie R. Bielss April 17, 2010

Thanks Susan. Funny thing - this was taken at 9:30am. Guess with being right on the Eastern/Central time zone, I might should alter my photography cut-off time to 9am; which would be 10am 70 miles east of us. #8541664

I like the original of this beautiful chestnut. The silky coat really stands out and by comparison the desaturated image looks rather flat. If I were flicking through a magazine I would be far more likely to stop at the first image. I realise I tend to see things somewhat differently than many of you and there is no right or wrong but I almost always would rather have an image a bit over-saturated rather than under. I am thinking back to film slide days when I much preferred brand A over brand B and yes I have forgotten whether it was Fuji over Kodak or the other way round. One popped the other didn't and I cared not whether that one was 100% realistic.
Of course, me being in the spirit of spreading joy, just maybe trying some compromise adjustment might please all. :0) #8542039

Teresa H. Hunt April 20, 2010

Christie, the yellow desaturation worked well. He's a beautiful animal. I hope you can find some more at this location. :) #8556443
