Terrific picture, Charles. I was wondering with an 8 second exposure, why wasn't the lamp blown out and overexposed? #233855

Chuck Inglefield April 08, 2005 0

Great question, Dennis. The lamp was overexposed. When I processed the photo with Photoshop, I "burned" in the lamp an extra 2 stops (or a close equivalent to that). I underexposed the image to start with to get the effect I was looking for (dark asphalt and dark reflection), then made final dodging/burning adjustments in Photoshop.
Thanks for your compliment. #1237426

Another way, since the scene is static and shot with a tripod: Expose once for the light and once for the dark. Overlay them in PS and mask out one, then flatten the image. #1245436

Thanks for the tip Paul

Thanks for the comments. Another trick similar to Paul's suggestion I have used recently is to process the same photo twice from the Canon Raw file into photoshop. This uses Photoshop's RAW converter software.

This method is useful if you don't have a tripod available to shoot the subject with exactly the same framing but at two different exposures, and you realize when you get home that you blew out your highlights or lost your shadow detail.

The technique is to use the exposure compensation (not sure the exact name) slider to reduce or increase the exposure to an apppropriate level to get your hightlights for one copy of the image and then do it again to get your shadows for the other copy of the image. Then just follow Paul's idea above.

I call this my shortcut method for increasing dynamic range. It will only work if the image has at least maintained some detail in the shadows/highlights. This method also tends to create more "noise" in a photo, so you should be prepared to deal with that issue.

Paul's method is by far the best, but this shortcut has save many photos I would have thrown away otherwise.

This photo is an example of one I did recently using the above process to get the sky from white to blue and keep the detail of the backlit building naturally visible. #1248247
