Congratulations Kelly on this wonderful shot! You can't help but smile when you look at this, it is perfect! #1188254

Kelly Plitt March 18, 2005 0

THANKS again to everyone! In response to Olivia's comment on the toning - here's how I do it in photoshop: Instead of simply desaturating the photo, then adding sepia back in, I create a color layer (mode=color) and "spill" in my chosen color using the bucket tool. Then I go nuts tweaking that layer via color balance to find my desired tone.

For whatever reason, this method adds tons of depth and beautiful tonality to an image. It is also a great way to change an image into b/w. Just use either black or white as your color in that layer. The results are COMPLETELY different than simply desaturating - so it's great to have an alternative.

Another fun thing is to play with the opacity of the color layer, which lets the original colors show through - this gives a great, dreamy antiqued feeling to an image.

Thanks again to everyone for your comments!

Hey, I love the coloring but don't understand what you mean by creating a color layer. It is really a unique technique. #1198773

Kelly Plitt March 22, 2005 0

Hi Michelle - A color layer is a layer which acts kind of like putting colored cellophane over a picture.

Layers can be defined in all different modes - one of which is "color."

If you are not familiar with photoshop layers, it's pretty easy if you check the help file, or look it up on the internet, there's a wealth of information!

There is so much to learn in photoshop, all I can say is DIG IN! :) #1198844

April 18, 2005 0

Kelly,

I cannot say enough about this precious photo. I cannot keep my eyes off of it. I'd like to ask you a question if you don't mind...When you created the color layer and used the paint bucket to "spill" in your chosen color, what WAS the chosen color? And was there more than one layer before you tweaked with color balance? Your tones are beautiful!
#1263136

Kelly Plitt June 28, 2005 0

Oh dear, I'm afraid I haven't checked these comments in a long time - to answer Kim's question - the color I ended up with for the sepia color layer is #321F0C - easy to just type in when you are selecting your foreground color in photoshop. Hope that helps!!

Thanks again for all your wonderful comments! -Kelly #1528854
