I'll try to address the questions.

The only filter I had on the camera lens was a UV filter. I need to spend some money on filters but the good quality 77mm ones are more than I want to spend right now.

Yes, Topaz Adjust was used on this image, but so was Photomatix. I was hoping to do a true HDR image from 3 shots but I ended up only doing a pseudo HDR image. The clouds were moving so fast that the 3 images just would not line up correctly. So I put the image through Photomatix and then Topaz Adjust for just a little more "pop".
