This is a GREAT shot, especially of the bridge/field/lighting. Not crazy about the vette though. (I know others said it is an Austin Healey, but it looks more like a vette to me! ?)However, I have one question in general for this site: I thought the rules said no composites? If so, why did this win second place? Don't get me wrong--it's a great shot and totally deserves it--unless the rules prohibit composites. I read the rules once and don't remember--any thoughts? If that is the case, then the expectation is that the shots are natural.
This is obviously a composite. Between the car and the rest of the shot, the angles don't match up, nor does the lighting, shadows, sharpness, and tone.
In my own humble opinion, this is fine to enter, but it should be disclaimed as a composite. Cheating is so rampant in our culture today, from steroid use in sports, to Enron, Tyco, and Halliburton, to executive embezzlement, to political vote rigging, lying, and favors, to "small" everyday cheating for a slight edge, such as 80% of A students admitting to cheating, rampant lying on resumes, etc. I'm sure that cheating WASN'T your intention (I sincerely do not mean to imply that), I only bring this up to point out the fact that with cheating so rampant, you want to go OUT OF YOUR WAY to avoid the slightest impression that it could be going on here. As an old proverb says, "when waking through your neighbor's melon patch, don't stop to tie your shoes".
Anyway it's a nice composite, and the covered bridge shot is simply, incredibly...awesome. Lose the car! #610347
Jim Collier June 22, 2004 0
Actually, it looks like the field/bridge combo is a composite as well (albeit a very well-done one). The shadows in the field do not match the bridge. And there seems to be a glaring lack of anything for the bridge to be going over! :-)So we have a three-piece composite: field, bridge, and car. Excellent composite! But again, has it won second place while meeting the rules and the presumption of the judges of meeting those rules? I'm not throwing that question out just to cast doubt--I really don't know myself. I suppose I should look it up. Anyone know offhand?
(BTW I did not enter that contest so I have no competitive interest in bringing this up. Although I do not assume that Mike cheated, I will admit that my "anti-cheat technology"--that riteous sense we are all born with and it has even been proven that apes possess--is probably what motivated me to write more than a few sentences about. Personally, I would be totally fine with this shot hanging on somebody's wall, large and framed, where it makes no intrinsic suggestions of authenticity. It is very striking and beautiful.) #610369
Jim Collier June 22, 2004 0
Well just to continue this marathon of posting from one person, I did check the rules. I did not see that composites are forbidden. My apologies Mike for calling that into question. But I am still dismayed that a three-part composite won second place. I have no problem with composites at all--as long as they are disclaimed as such, especially if entered into a contest, where other people work very hard to get the perfect shot, naturally. Someone might have driven thousands of miles and waited many hours to get a shot like this, naturally. By not disclaiming it as a composite, that is just what people assume you might have done, and reward you accordingly. It isn't fair to the others. This is still a "photography" contest, not a "Photoshop" contest (there ARE several sites specifically for that).
My bottom-line point is this: composites are fine, even great--just disclaim it as such! #610380
