This is a small portion of a colony of King penguins at Fortuna Bay on South Georgia Island (a sub-Antarctic island). There were several thousand penguins here. They had huddled in a tight group because of the strong wind and rain. A wider view is in the discussion.
I took this from a small hill about 100 yards from the colony. The intermittent wind gusts were so strong (about 50 mph) that we had to crouch low to the ground to keep from getting blown over. The rain was light but I had to clean my lens after every shot.
Nikkor VR 70-200mm f/2.8G@200mm with 1.7 TC = 340mm; f7.1@1/200 sec; ISO 400. Cropped,levels adjusted, & sharpened in PSP X2.

I cannot even imagine seeing this sight--but then I cannot even imagine taking a vacation someplace where I would have to crouch low on the ground in rain and 50 mph gusts in order to get a shot. I can do that here on many winter days :) #5667455
