Duo toned Daisy, this is very interesting Joan, I wonder what the real colour is underneath. Well done, I love the crop! ~Pat #928589Dale Hardin May 25, 2008
This is something I've never had any luck with Joan. Seems I just could never seem to find the right colors. Will just have to keep trying I guess. Dale #5975630Joan E. Hoffman May 25, 2008
Yah I hear you Dale... I did a reasonable job once (see Counting them up in my gallary) but don't seem to have a "feel" for it, as much as I appreciate the work of those that do. This one however, I actually don't mind! #5976105Joan E. Hoffman May 25, 2008
And Pat... the actual colors are a beautifully vibrant yellow with an intense green centre !! #5976107Laura E. Swan May 25, 2008
Were you shotting for sepia? If so, your sepia is more on target than mine ever is. I can't seem to attain the brown tones I need for a true sepia. Yellow comes through too much. It's a real trick. Yours here is not bad AT ALL. (Oh my gosh, did I actually just write a totally serious comment?) -Laura #5976121Joan E. Hoffman May 25, 2008
Well the funniest part, Laura, is...I actually did not use the sepia filter, I just severely unsaturated this very yellow flower... ? go figure huh? Most of the time I have no idea what I am doing... and have about 40 gazillion failures to prove it... but the ratio is gettin' lower #5976129Chris N. Sweet May 25, 2008
Joan this is stunning. I absolutely love this shot! The tone is fantastic, the detail magnificent and the grainy look......just beautiful! This shot has truly won me over. Very well done. #5976152Chris N. Sweet May 25, 2008
I like it so much Im back for more! I just want to add that this would definitely be blown up and hung on my lounge wall. #5976154Laura E. Swan May 25, 2008
Love your sense of humor Joan. Too funny. It also sounds like you have the same PS that I have...the one that came with the camera, right?! Ha! I know all about that SEVERE UNSATURATION technique! -LauraP.S. I think you are going to have to make an 8X10 of this one for Chris's Birthday. :) #5976295
Sherry McClead May 25, 2008
This shot is all about texture to me... color would draw away from the intense texture. I want to reach out and touch it... it looks so rich. #5976432Joan E. Hoffman May 25, 2008
Wow, Thank you so much Chris... Coming from you that is very high praise indeed! I appreciate it!Laura I use Corel PSP 12... plus Nikon Capture NX for raw processing. and.... I tend to severely OVER saturate as you know from my gallery LOL
Sherry, thank you... I am slowly getting a tiny bit of a handle on this monotone persuasion, have always admired it, and am learning why.
And back to you Laura regarding you PS... I might not make an 8X10 for Chris's birthday, but can definitley send the raw data instead ~L~
And back to Chris... many happy returns, if indeed, you are soon to be a birthday boy! #5976471
Laura E. Swan May 25, 2008
Oh, Chris is gonna owe me for this one! The RAW DATA! COOL!~~~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRIS!!! ~~~
(Whenever it happens to be, that is!!!) Ha! #5976915
Joan E. Hoffman May 25, 2008
LOL Laura... too funny, Chris has to 'fess up or no raw data!!BTW what category would one enter this into? Macro, Flowers, DD, Catch all? dosen't seem to fit in any particular one to me. I think they need a mono category! #5976942
Laura E. Swan May 25, 2008
Details and Macro. For SURE! :) -LAura #5977109Aimee C. Eisaman May 26, 2008
Well Joan....glad to see that you are not having to go thru a gazillion shots as much....I'm still THERE myself! LOL! I love this shot.....the center is hypnotic...great tones! I would say try Flowers then Details and Macro. I agree they could use a mono category, but with how many they have already I guess it would make things difficult! I would not do DD for this one....I have found that they really like flowers to be in the flowers section unless you really mess with them to the extreme! Best Wishes! #5978371Joan E. Hoffman May 26, 2008
Hey Aimee, Thank you so much! AND could have sworn I just saw your old Icon, and suddenly it was NEW. Really like it. Good Job! #5979573M.Christine Duncan May 26, 2008
OOoooo Joan, way retro, way cool, way to go!!! This is a wonderful treatment! Great crop too. Wow. #5980123Laura E. Swan May 26, 2008
Good to know Aimee...Shoot, and I just entered a flower into Details and Macro. Darn. Oh well. I will know for next time.#5980194
Joan E. Hoffman May 26, 2008
Thanks Christine always nice to hear from you!... and darn it all... Laura... you owe me one... entered this into Details and macro this morning ROFL... oh well.. who knows... always next month ~G~ #5980639Joan E. Hoffman May 26, 2008
LOL okay you are safe Laura... flower macros are accepted in either category! #5980650Laura E. Swan May 26, 2008
I see there were 3 minutes between response one and response two there, Joan. I am glad you took a few minutes and decided to forgive me. :) xo -LauraP.S. QUESTION. (because of something you just said Joan..."always next month")
Q. If you enter a certain flower in the contest under MACRO one day can you enter the same one under FLOWERS another day? I have never tried to enter the SAME shot twice in a month. Can we? #5980882
Joan E. Hoffman May 26, 2008
Actually I was wondering the exact same thing myself Laura... the answer is ... I don't know...could not find anything on it #5981117Laura E. Swan May 26, 2008
Well, maybe our contest gallery storage area would tell us right away if we tried it and we not suppose to. On the other hand maybe it would let us, then remove it later and take the credit away that day not allowing a new shot to be entered. Something to read up on for sure. #5981244Dale Hardin May 27, 2008
Hi Laura and Joan. I'm pretty sure you can enter an image as often as you like as long as you only enter one a day. I've seen many galleries with the same image that has slight PP work done and re-entered. Dale #5981624Tammy L. Newcomb May 27, 2008
Great Photo and very different for which I love.Tammy #5982720
Conrad L. Conero May 28, 2008
This is beautiful, Joan. Looks like somthing Imogen Cunningham might have done. #5987996Joan E. Hoffman May 28, 2008
Thank you very much TammyConrad... Admittedly I had to look up Imogene Cunningham. I can only WISH that anything I do could possible come anywhere near to her exquiste study of plant forms! Thank you so much for introducing me to her and her collection. And thanks to Chris, for introducing me to this world. I am really starting to get it that mono is NOT short for monotonous!! ~L~ #5988050
Graham Robards May 28, 2008
Hi there Laura, only the one entry of that particular photo a month, the rules say not repeatedly enter it into
different catagories. Rules are HERE.
Remember you can enter once in 24 hours... this is what I do, if I enter
into a catagory and then decide I'd prefer to enter it into another one - I delete the image to get rid of it then upload it all over again as a new photo. If any comments have been left on the page I copy them over. .
Laura E. Swan May 28, 2008
Awesome Pat. I kinda thought that was the way is is but wasn't sure. I have never entered the same shot twice in a month because of this very reason. I thought I had read that when I first joined. :) Joan will appreciate reading this, too, no doubt. Appreciate it! :) -Laura :) #5990001Aggie Villanueva May 28, 2008
I love the suede texture to this photo. You nailed this one, girlfriend! I think your undersaturating might have given this fabulous texture to it. I'll have to try this sometime. One of my favorite sepias was a duotone in PS. I have tried all the other ways of colorizing in PS and could never achieve that certain look that the duotone filter produced on that one picture. You just have to experiment until ya get it right, huh? And you sure got it right on this one. #5990278
Joan E. Hoffman May 28, 2008
Aggie, thank you! Man I am going to have to start writing down exactly what I do... I flip between Nikon DX for raw processing, then Corel PSP and back again, and then forget EXACTLY how I accomplished something, was trying to reproduce this today... and could get close but not completely right. I think editors should keep track of the changes, even after you hit the save as button ~LOL~ #5990313Aggie Villanueva May 28, 2008
I set up my PS to do exactly that. It saves every step I make so I can go back and trace it. It's very hard to follow though as it literally write everything--like do and undo and do and undo (20 times) as I'm comparing "do's"!!! Anyway there might be a function like that in your program too. #5990354Joan E. Hoffman May 28, 2008
Mine keeps a history... while I am working on it... but don't think it is "registered" after I save.... maybe I am missing something... will have to go and investigate!! Thanks Aggie! How did you craft fair go BTW? #5990417Cary Rogers May 31, 2008
Very nice image comp and lighting, Joan...and then your "duotone" processing added the perfect touch! nice work! #6002998Joan E. Hoffman June 01, 2008

Nicely framed, well done making it a duo toned photo. Im sure it's also great to see the real colors behind the daisy. #6122087Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
