Thank you all for the kind comments. As one camera ad says "timing is everything"! This was taken in Oct '07 at the recently discovered (2004) emperor penguin colony on Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea east of the Antarctic Peninsula. Amazing to think that with our current technology such a latge colony (2500 pairs or so) could remain completely unknown for so long. A testament to the size and remoteness of Antarctica.Peter #5408209

Peter, in my humble opinion, and in my "winner's choices", this was the Grand Prize Winner. I want to give due credit to the 1st place winners and Grand Prize winner, but I am a bit shocked that this was not #1.This is a world class photo that easily could appear in natioanl or international premier magazines.
In a thread about how wildlife photography seems to get shortchanged here at BP, and one member equated wildlife photography as "lucky snapshots", I stated the following:
"Peter Firth's "Emperor Penguin Family" won 2nd Place last month in the free contest, a photo he shot in Antarctica. With all due respect to the 1st Place winners and Grand Prize winner, I will continue to offer comments and suggestions so that incredible wildlife photos like Peter's get the respect that they deserve."
The link to this thread is here:

Instructor Richard Lynch posted responses, and he responded to the member who equated wildlife photos to "lucky snapshots".
I think all wildlife photographers would be interested in reading that thread. The entire thread. #5647118

This is an outstanding photo Peter! Full of feeling and such clarity! Congratulations on your winning in BP and winning a place in National Geographic's Daily Dozen Contest!
