Artist vs Technically Correct I just got a new photography book and was trying out some of the ideas. Here is my question, which may not be new: When is a photo creatively artistic (Monet Style) and when is it just out of focus? I know what I believe to be the obvious answers - depends on the viewers perspective or depends on the intentionality of the blur. How do you know? Is there a determining factor? Inquiring minds want to know....

Good question! This is just like the question “When is breaking the rules on composition a good decision or not?”. My answer is that if you are trying to please everyone, always follow the rules and always keep all of your photos in focus. If you are trying to please yourself then don’t be concerned with the questions.

So…. What makes a good photo? Answer…. What ever it takes to make the viewer stop and look at it. If you can capture their attention and spend time looking at your photo and enjoying it’s viewing. In reference to the BP contest, a good photo is one that would make the judges stop scanning all the other photos and to pause and spend time viewing yours.
