New lens- IS humming

I just purchased a new (it had better be new) Canon EF 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. It hums when the IS is on during focusing. I dont mind the soft sound, but I am not sure the IS is working. I have tried shutting on/off the auto focus, it will only hum when the IS is on. Is there any way to check if the IS is working. I hate to send the lens back if I dont have to. Thanks for any help.

I have several IS lenses (though not the EF 28-135) and none hum so I can't offer any hints there.

But one way to check to see if IS is working is to focus on something a ways away at 135 mm. Normally, it is difficult to hand-hold without some noticeable blurriness or tiny movements in the view finder. When you press the shutter button half-way you should see the image suddenly become crisp and the movement go away.

There may be better ways to check this but the effect is so obvious with my EF 70-200 it has let me know I left IS off on more than one occasion. =^)

  Hi Dawn,
Like RK, I have a couple of IS lenses (70-200 & 100-400) and neither one of these hum. My 100-400 is over 5 years old now and 1 way I know if IS is working is when I set it on a tripod & leave IS ON - this will make the image a bit soft compared to when I turn IS OFF on the tripod, the image is crisp. The IS actually causes the softness on a tripod with this lens. The 28-135 is much shorter and may not be as susceptible to IS being on or off ???
Maybe another user with the 28-135 will chime in here but I suspect you may need to swap this lens for another one. Hope you used B&H, Amazon, local store or someone with a good exchange/return policy - just in case.
my .02,
Carlton

  Hi Dawn,

The hum is just the IS doing its thing. There is nothing to worry about. My 300 f4 had a very soft hum to it, not heard if traffic was present or a wind above 10mph was blowing. The 70-200 f4L is quiet as was my 100-400. Although Canon says it is safe to use the newer lenses on a tripod with IS left ON I choose to turn it off. For like the Irishman said, "to be sure to be sure".

Please remember that IS only takes away YOUR small movements and not the subjects motions. When shooting birds in flight and panning I turn the IS off and shoot at a high shutterspeed. It also saves battery usage. RK did a good job of telling you how to check if the IS is turned on.

Lynn

It's just the gyroscope things spinning that you hear.
