settings I have the Nikon D50 with Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-300 mm 1:4.5-5.6G VR Lens. Whether I set it on full Manual or A priority, it automatically overides my choosen settings. WHY?

Hi Diane, To accomplish a fabulous picture, your job is to identify the opportunity. Now you compose the picture and press the go “go button” (shutter release). The camera then takes the picture (exposes). The picture that results can be correctly exposed – over exposed – under exposed. The picture that results will be of high-quality only if correctly exposed. If you set the camera to “auto” mode, the camera’s built-in computer logic takes over and sets the shutter speed and lens aperture for optimum exposure. As you know the shutter speed is how long the light is allowed to play on the light sensitive chip. It is this chip that records the image during the brief time the shutter is open. Additionally, the chip logic sets the size of the lens aperture. The aperture controls how much light the lens allows in. In “auto” mode the camera performs both shutter and aperture adjustments. This mode overrides any and all of your settings. Now “A” mode stands for aperture priority. This is a camera function that allows the photographer to select what aperture opening will be used by the camera to take the picture. In this mode you are telling the camera “I know best what aperture to use, please don’t help me”. Now the camera is still obligated to make the exposure a good one. To accomplish the camera’s logic adjusts the shutter speed for optimum exposure. Thus if you have selected a shutter speed it will be ignored in this mode. Nobody said this is easy. The best countermeasure is to read and re-read the camera manual. Alan Marcus

Hi Alan Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! All you explained I am very well aware of. Again the problem I am having with the camera is when I set it on Aperture Priortity or Manual and dial in my settings, it automatically overrides and choses it own settings and does not produce me with the desired results. I don't know how to get around this. I did refere back to the manual and I found one possible function I may have forgoten about. But for example...I photograph dancer in low light setting. ISO 800 sometimes 1600. for 800 ss 1/100 1/60 F4.5 take pic and camera overrides and gives me F5.6 ! Picture is not good! ideally I would like F4 but my lens doesnt offer that. Do you have any suggestions? What would you recommend ss if my Lens only sets at F4.5 - 5.6 at best! subjects are belly dancers in dimly light restuarant. I'm open to any suggestions! Thanks so much!

Diane, If you are indeed in full manual and the camera chooses a different setting, I'd suggest the 2 button reset. From they way you are explaining this, something is indeed wrong. Are you in bracket mode accidentally? Pete

The 70-300 can set f/4.5 only at the short end. If you set f/4.5 but zoom to longer focal lengths the maximum aperture becomes f/5, then f/5.6.

Pete good point! I need to double check that, but I don't think I am. I ran through all my settings last night. I shall check it again! Jon...That explains alot! I don't know why I didn't realize that. I thought the whole purpose of A priority was to over ride that?? Guess I still have a lot to learn! So do you have a suggestion as to what the best setting would be for photographing dancers in low light settings?

Diane, You can not override a setting if the lens is limited to 5.6

Maybe add flash if allowed. Otherwise, you need a lens with wider maximum aperture. 50 f/1.8 is good and cheap. If you need more reach try an 85 f/1.8 or a 70-200 f/2.8 zoom.

Jon thanks for the feedback. Unfortuantely no flash allowed. I have 28 - 80 but then I am faced with not being close enough to the dancers. It's a catch 22! WEll, I will just have to take all the possibilites I have to work with and make teh best of it. Thanks so much!
