maxxum 7 will not focus

i just purchased a used maxxum 7. the problem is that it will not focus clearly in manual or auto mode.i have tried different lenses that work fine on my other maxxums.i have tried resetting the camera to factory specs.i have tried the diopter adjustment which is working fine.the mirror does not seem foggy or dirty as far as I can see.i have tried cleaning the lens contacts on both lens and camera.any ideas?

Does it attempt to AF and just cannot find focus? If so, maybe the AF sensors in the bottom of the mirror box have dust/lint covering them.

If it doesn't attempt AF at all, check that custom function 23 = 1. If CF23 = 2 then autofocus activation is with the Spot AF button or Focus Area Selector instead of the shutter button.

the camera does attempt to auto focus and stops at the point where it thinks focus has been obtained but thru the view finder the image is not quite clear.the image has a slight blurry look about it. it also has the same appearence in manual focus mode.i tried the lens on a 9xi and it works great.as stated other lenses produce the same blurry effect on the maxxum 7. I guess I will shoot a few pictures and have them developed if they come out satisfactory then maybe the diopter adjustment has been changed and is to out of specs. for my eyes.
thank you for your time and consideration

I have a friend who had the same problem with her maxxum camera and lens interface. Contact Minolta (sony) and they should be able to tell you where to send it to be fixed.

  hi exeryone,
thanks for the responses to my questions. what I need to know now, is where are the auto focus sensors located on the maxxum 7. I do realize that when found, cleaning them might be more than I care to attempt. I do not wish to damage the camera to any further extent. any advise concerning this matter will be greatly appreciated.

See the diagram here: LINK, the AF sensors are in pink. They won't be as obvious in the camera, just a couple small holes at the bottom of the mirror box. Use a bulb blower or clean lens brush to clear out any dust or lint.

The mirror may be in the way. Lifting it manually risks harming its surface and mechanism. You also don't want to blow dirt back into the shutter curtains. Instead, take the film out of the camera, remove the lens and open the back. Set the camera for BULB exposure and press and hold the shutter button. This will raise the mirror and open the shutter curtains putting both out of the way while you clean the inside. If you have a remote control shutter release that can lock the shutter button down (like the Minolta RC-1000), that would help so that you don't have to hold the shutter button down while also holding the camera. (I think the current Sony remotes RM-S1AM and RM-L1AM are the same as Minolta's RC-1000).

Note - to enable this the camera should be in M exposure mode to set the shutter to BULB. Custom Function 5 = 1 to enable the shutter to open without film loaded, and Custom Function 16 = 2 to enable the shutter to open without a lens attached.
