Weird grinding sound when using zoom. I bought a Canon EOS450D just a week ago. I've noticed then when I zoom in or out a grinding sound comes from the lens as I do so, is this normal or should I have it changed?

I have Nikon ... but if mine made a sound like that, I'd be looking to exchange or return it!!!!!

Hi Mike, I agree with David - which lens are you talking about ? The only thing I could think of otherwise would be if you are using auto focus and trying to manually focus at the same time the camera is trying to auto-focus the lens. ??? Carlton

Thanks for your responses. The lens is the kit lens, EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS. Its not the focus ring that the sound appears to be coming from but the zoom ring, so its not that im tryin to use MF while the camera is set to AF. The lens seems to be focusing fine and taking pictures without any problems, its just this sily noise whilst adjusting the zoom.

Hi Mike, The lens will make a sound when focusing but not a grinding sound. If you bought this at a store, take it in and try another lens and see if it does the same thing. If you bought it on line, hopefully from B & H or Amazon (someone with great customer service) I would send it back and get another one. I wouldn't trust a "grinding sound" and even though it may be working good now, I would fear it may break soon. My .02 - Carlton

I believe that you have an Image Stabilization Lens, and it is probably this that is making the noise. Mine makes a humming noise, but not a grinding noise. Turn off the image stabilization with the switch and see if it goes away.
