Photography Question

PC Problem

I have 2 Dell PC's using Vista. When I purchased my new Nikon D300 and new memory, high speed ATP, my desk top started acting strange. When I try to download any memory card, the Vista auto play comes up and I click it and add a name it then gives me an error message "MS Explorer has stopped working. Windows is looking for a solution" It then says "MS Explorer is restating" and it does. I can only my get the photos through My Computer. It then moved into PS CS3 and Bridge. Dell said it was a hardware problem and after 4 trips and all new insides they are sending me a new tower as they were unable to fix it. The problem is now on my laptop as that is what I am using. I have never felt it was a hardware issue, but what is it? Has anyone got any ideas? A new tower isn't going to help if the problem continues.

Is it a problem with Vista? Have you considered buying a MAC?

Well, you gave me a chuckle!

Yes, I am thinking it could be that also. So far I have gotten nowhere with Adobe or MS.

I am thinking of throwing my computer over the bridge and into the Mississippi River. I am not at the point of jumping myself!!

You will be before you get it worked out, I'm sure. I finally have mine working pretty well after I deleted everything I could think of that wasn't essential to pictures. Mine is an HP..It was just horrendous. Vista is a disaster. What you should have done was make them put in XP or something else that works.

It doesn't sound like this, but how new is your D300? Do you use RAW? How recently did you update your Adobe RAW converter if you do?

If you use RAW and you didn't update that software since the D300 was added to it....

My husband, a computer guy, just went out and bought XP at the store. They are supposed to stop selling it soon, if they haven't already. He HATES Vista and thinks Microsoft is crazy. Down side to XP is that Microsoft will stop supporting it in 2011.

Think about it...With how much memory is needed for Vista to run what used to be a reasonable amount of memory no longer is. It will basically make the computers obsolete that don't have what is required for Vista.

Most of the computer companies must be loving Microsoft now. People will need to buy more computers.

Nancy ~ How much Ram do you have on your computers running Windows Vista? 2gb is recommended for Vista Home Premium to run smoothly.

Also you need to make sure you have the most current camera drivers loaded on your computer to download photos properly.

I happen to love using Windows Vista and have not had any problems whatsoever with it. (My laptop has 2gb of ram and the desktop has 3gb).

So far I am good in all your areas of suggestions. I have 4 GB of RAM, have updated my RAW, and everything else I can think of. Until now I have loved Vista, but I don't know if it is Vista or something with Adobe, probably Vista.
A Mac is looking better all the time, but I could only afford one new computer, a laptop, and I think it would be confusing using both platforms. Thanks for all your help.
