Photoshop elements6 raw

I have Photoshop elements 6. I love the raw editer it uses. The only problem is it wont let me convert the raw images to jpeg to put online. I have looked on adobe's website and I have the program that came with my nikon, but I hate it. thank you

  Erin,
To convert:
1. Open the image.
2. Make any adjustments you need to in the RAW dialog.
3. Click Open.
4. Choose Save As (File>Save As)
5. In the Save As dialog, change the Format to JPEG
6. Click Save.

Try that and let me know if anything goes wrong.

  Hi, Erin,

I'm not sure of the specific mechanics or menu options (I use PS3) but you will need to go to Image Options and change one or two settings.

Make sure your "Image Mode" is RGB and the bit depth is 8-bits/channel. (Nikon and Canon save images natively in 14- or 16-bit depth which is incompatible with JPEG.) My guess is the problem is the latter vis-a-vis not converting your images.

Cheers,

RK

Thought I responded to this again the other day...

If you get the Camera RAW dialog and Open the image, you will have it open in Photoshop...At that point you can select to Save As, and you will have the option to save in a variety of formats.

If you are not opening in Photoshop, then that may be the issue. Can you take a screen shot of the screen you get on open?

RK is right about the 8-bit being incompatible with JPEG, but on save the program allows saving 16-bit images to JPEG through the Save For Web option (below Save As on the File menu).

I hope that helps!

I dont know how to do a screen shot so I took a picture. The first picture is the raw editor in photoshop and the second is in the save screen. I have tried changing to 8 bit and still it only gives me the option of dng. thank you for all your help

  Erin,
Instead of clicking SAVE in the RAW dialog, please click the OPEN IMAGE button. This will open the image in Photoshop/Elements and you will have the opportunity to save the file from there. As I suggested earlier, but with a bit more detail based on your screen shots:

To convert:
1. Choose a RAW image to open using Photoshop/Elements File>Open. If it is a RAW image it will open in Camera RAW (it is not yet in Photoshop).
2. Make any adjustments you need to in the RAW dialog.
3. Click the Open Image button to the right of the dialog. This will open the image in Photoshop/Elements and close the Camera RAW dialog.
4. In Photoshop/Elements, choose Save As from the File menu (File>Save As).
5. In the Save As dialog, change the Format to JPEG, and change the file name if desired.
6. Click the Save button.

The key here seems to be that you are not doing Step 3...and you need to to open the converted image.

OK?

Thanks for the tips. One thing I have noticed is after saving as JPEG format Firefox, Opera, (non Apple based apps) etc. show the colors washed out, whereas Preview and Safari (Apple based apps) show the colors as PhotoShop Elements does. Any idea what's going on and how to remedy this so when I post images to the web that everyone will see them as I want them to?

  Brent,
Sounds like a color management issue. I don't have a quick reliable fix for that. My first guess is that you are using AdobeRGB as a working space, and many people recommend that -- and often it is a problem. Not that it CAN'T work, but that it may not be the best place to start. I just blogged about color management (http://insights.betterphoto.com/weblogs_by_richard_lynch/index.html)...you might find some additional hints there!

  Richard,

Yes, I am shooting in RAW AdobeRGB. Thanks for the link to your blog. I will read it.

  Richard,

Your blog states:
"I choose to use an AdobeRGB (camera)>sRGB (convert to sRGB in Photoshop)>sRGB (add an sRGB profile to send to print) workflow for what I believe are sensible reasons based on my long experience in digital imaging."

Does this workflow also apply to save-as-web or save-as -- both to JPEG? If so, what would be the necessary steps in Photoshop Elements 6 on Mac OS X?

Thanks,
Brent

  Brent,
Because I print and upload to sites, it is my choice to work this way for both. I save to PSD, not JPEG -- at least not till it becomes an advantage. Save for Web may not be to your advantage as it will strip profiles.

Don't just do it because I do. It may not be best for you -- especially if you don't already optimize your images.

For Elements, it is pretty easy to work this way. Set color management to optimize for Web.

  Richard,

Thanks for the advice re PSD and JPEG. This afternoon I was playing around some more and have royally messed things up.

Before I switched to Mac, my Windoze machine didn't have any of these issues and I am growing frustrated.

For all the good that Mac is, PhotoShop Elements isn't one of them -- at least not my experience so far. I know that millions disagree -- and I would like to as well, if only I could get this save as or save for web figured out. Argh!

If I could, I would pay someone to help me out to figure this out once and for all.

  Brent,
I guess I am not clear what the issue is. Are you suggesting that you can't Save As or use Save for Web? If you are talking about color management issues, I do have a course here on betterphoto that addresses color management. However if this is a simple question I can answer it here.Let me know what is happening, and what you expect, and I'll try to help you out.

  Richard,

Thanks for your willingness to help. It is appreciated.

My issue is that I am unable to get 'Save As' or 'Save For Web' (both as JPEG) to show the same color as the RAW image does inside of PSE or even as the JPEG shows when I open it inside of PSE.

If someone out there has a 13.3" Macbook similar to mine (2.2 GHz Intel Coure 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, IntelGMA X3100 built in 144MB total VRAM), I would very willingly set it and also my PSE to the same settings as theirs, if that will resolve the problems.

Thanks,
Brent

  Brent,
It is a mistake to use settings just because others use them. If you had a look at the blog I just wrote (http://insights.betterphoto.com/weblogs_by_richard_lynch/index.html) it says that. You need to do the things suggested there, and there are no shortcuts.

Addressing your message here...Once you open an image in Elements it is no longer in RAW format. You have made changes to the image just by opening it -- it is a necessary process or it would look quite awful indeed.

Have you calibrated your monitor? If so, how? Have you set up color management? If so, what are the settings you chose and why? I could guess at your settings considering what you see as a result, but starting from the camera, what is the color space you have chosen there...Is it AdobeRGB? What are the differences you see between your images in Photoshop and those you see on the web?

The reason I teach a course in this is exactly because it is rather involved to sort out, even when the solutions might be terribly simple.

  Richard,

Since my last email, I have calibrated my Macbook's built-in LCD monitor using the Apply Display Calibrator Assistant. I couldn't figure out the expert mode so I used the simple mode and landed on gamma 2.2 and white point of D6500. Prior to that it was gamma 1.8 and native white point.

I also decided to switch from shooting RAW Adobe RBG to RAW sRGB, and since doing so, save-as of save-for-web have worked very well when saving as JPEG.

PSE has been configured thus:
-Color settings: Always optimize for computer screens;
-Image Mode is set to RBG color

So, no, this doesn't help me at all when converting existing Adobe RBG photos (over 6,000) to JPEG for web display, but at least I have something that will work going forward.

I wish I could remember if I experienced this challenge when using WinDoze.

Thanks again for all of your advice.

-Brent

Native gamma for mac is 1.8, not 2.2. I'm not sure that should be changed.

With color settings "optimize for computer screens" Elements should be assuming your color space is sRGB and converting to that when the images open. It should also embed an sRGB profile on save.

This really should convert images properly, unless the images coming into Elements are improperly tagged. Another option is to convert to sRGB profiles.

If your settings in Elements are as you say, where are you seeing the AdobeRGB profile? You should not have to change the settings on camera.

Richard
