Lense going bad

I have a Canon EF-S 17-85 that seems to be going out of focus. When shooting at 17mm the focus is very bad but it's worse when the subject is far away. I tried a test shot up close and it seemed to focus on a point in the foreground. It's about 2 years old. Can lenses get out of whack?. Auto-focus works and there doesn't seem to be any other problems.

Like any mechanical device, Darren, a lens can "go out of whack".

In fact, wiht modern lenses, not only could the actual glass elements be misaligned or the zooming mechanism be miscalibrated, it's possible that the physical stuff is okay but the electronics go haywire. This happened to my 17-35MM f2.8 Nikkor a couple of years ago - it sometimes focused, sometimes didn't - a trip to Nikon showed that the circuit board inside the barrel of the lens was the culprit.

So it might be a good idea to send the lens back to Canon.
