Rebel XTi error msg. about reinstalling battery Hi folks, I just got a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (400D/Kiss X) Digital SLR Camera and all of a sudden it won't take pictures. I took a lot of pictures all day and wanted to go somewhere else to get some sunset pics, so I changed the battery to one that was 100% fired up. I was able to get about 20 shots when I got an error message that said, "Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch of OFF and ON again or reinstall the battery." I did both those things. I even went home and installed the original battery into it. I get the same message no matter what, and cannot take pictures. Any ideas?

My general rule with electronic equipment is: If it is going to fail it will be in the first couple of days or it will last a reasonably long time. This does not seem normal, so if you are within the return/exchange period I would opt for that. The only other thing you can do is clean the contacts on the battery with a pencil eraser perhaps. With it being new I can't imagine that being the problem, but worth a try. Good luck!!

Suzanne, Thanks so much for responding. You are right on. It was the contacts. I found a Canon tech support number among all the papers, and the tech support guy had me do that and ow the camera works fine. Whew. I was going to have withdrawal without it! : )

Just curious, if the camera is new why are the contacts a problem already? I have had my batteries for 1-2 years and not a problem. You might consider replacing them if it becomes a problem again. I have gotten some great deals on ebay for batteries. They say you have to be careful with non-OEM batteries, but I haven't had a problem as of yet.

The only thing I can think is that I got 2 lenses with it. A 18-35mm lens and a 75-300mm lens, and I switch back and forth between them. The batteries were just fine- it was dirty contacts on the body of the camera. Does that seem a likely culprit to you?

I change lenses an awful lot over the past 2 years and have never yet run into that problem. Not that this means there is a problem, but something I would watch. Of course sometimes it only takes a small foreign object. Glad you discovered the problem. I would go through withdrawal without mine too!
