Filters

Are there any special filters I should be thinking of using while in Alaska? My concern is the bright snow and ice. Any tips on snapping from a ship? Is 300mm sufficient?

No need for other filters other than the polarizer and a standard UV.

To compensate for bright snow and ice, just be sure to overexpose one to two stops when shooting a scene with a lot of snow or ice in it.

A 300mm lens should do well for you, depending upon how close the ship gets to shore. However, I would greatly recommend a tripod and fast film, since hand-holding this lens will often cause your photos to suffer from camera shake, even on somewhat bright days.
