Although there are highly acclaimed schools out there like Brooks, all one really needs is experience. Since photographers are usually independent, they do not need a degree. Having said that, it doesn't hurt to supplement experience with books, online classes, and formal education; you will most likely find it helpful to be guided and motivated, and this is extremely valuable.
