Depth of field on Nikon N65

I have a Nikon N65QD, and there is a button on this camera with a sign of Depth of Field. When I push on this button, I see through the view-finder the color of the object I want to take picture become darker. What is this button used for? I read the camera manual, but I couldn't find more information regarding to this button. I very appreciate to every one who can explain this button and how to use it when taking a photo.

That is your depth of field preview button. It allows you to look through your lens with it stopped down to whatever f-stop you have the lens set to. This allows you to see exactly what will and will not be in focus.
